European Collaboration Opportunity

18 August 2025

Dr Martina Sciberras, Mater Dei Hospital, Malta and Professor Carolina Ciacci, University of Salerno, Italy are inviting European institutions to participate in their study which aims to investigate the impact of celiac disease on patients' workplace productivity by looking at patient data from across Europe.

Despite increasing awareness and diagnosis of celiac disease the real life, functional burden on working adults remains underexplored. In the context of this study, absenteeism involves individuals staying home from work due to health related conditions. Presenteeism refers to when individuals attend work despite having health related issues to manage which may result in suboptimal productivity. The study aims to look at both of these in people with celiac disease, accumulating data from centres across Europe.

The research team are seeking institutions who can commit to recruiting a minimum of 100 adults with biopsy confirmed celiac disease which was diagnosed at least one year ago.

Each participating centre will be required to comply with local date protection regulations and obtain relevant ethical approval.

The deadline to express interest is 30 September 2025.
