The interest in celiac disease and the broader spectrum of gluten-related diseases, has never been greater. Significant progress has been made in the understanding of the pathogenesis of celiac disease. Cohort studies have shed light on the natural history of celiac disease paving the way for prevention strategies. There have also been developments in new diagnostic tools and protocols. A growing number of clinical trials are being undertaken with the ultimate aim to obtain a therapy alternative to the gluten free diet.
